Question: Has Higher Education Become A Business Just Like Any Other?

With news of projected fees in excess of 20K a year, investment in real estate and the final insult of Trinity College, Cambridge bidding for the O2 Arena.

Answer: I know what you mean and I do believe it has moved in that direction. However as long as there are enough lecturers there who are there for the research and the teaching (which there always will be) they will retain their core values. Yes unis are run by management teams who are interested in making money – but how else do they survive? The alternative is even more government funding – if unis can make money by themselves and save the tax payer a little bit then that is a good thing. 20K fees are another thing though – I don’t think it will happen any time soon!
