Question: Do I buy new investments or complete a transfer “in kind”?

I am looking to take money I have in a Roth IRA money market account and invest in Vanguard’s Star Fund (also as a Roth IRA). I want to avoid any taxes or penalties for making this transfer. I have the Options to “buy new investments” or complete an “in kind transfer”. Which do I do?

Answer: If you are going to buy the Vanguard Star fund you will need money to do so. Which IRA account charges the lesser fees for selling the securities you wish to sell? They are going to have to be sold. If Vanguard will do the transaction for less do an in kind transfer, if not sell the securities and transfer the money.
