Question: Will my CalPers pension be there when I retire in 5 years?

Is CalPers safe? I know it took a really hard hit on investments after the financial implosion. Is there a chance it will fail completely? Thanks.

Answer: This question (just like “is Social Security safe”) is a political question, rather than a financial one. Will the politicians in Sacramento (or Washington, in the case of Social Security) allow all of those retirees — who vote in greater numbers than any other age group — to starve and vote them out of office? Of course not! There may have to be relatively minor reductions in benefit amounts or eligibility, but the systems will never disappear completely.
